What is Coronary Angioplasty?

Coronary angioplasty is a minimally invasive medical procedure used to treat blocked or narrowed coronary arteries. During this procedure, a tiny balloon is inserted into the blocked artery and inflated to restore blood flow. In some cases, a stent may also be placed to keep the artery open.

When is Coronary Angioplasty Recommended?

Coronary angioplasty may be recommended in the following situations:

  • Treatment of angina (chest pain)
  • Relieving symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD)
  • Following a heart attack (myocardial infarction)
  • Restoring blood flow to the heart after diagnostic angiography

The Coronary Angioplasty Procedure:

  • Preparation: You will receive detailed instructions on pre-procedure preparations, including fasting and medication management.
  • During the Procedure: Coronary angioplasty is typically performed in a specialized catheterization lab. A catheter with a balloon is guided to the blocked artery, where the balloon is inflated to widen the artery and improve blood flow. If necessary, a stent may be placed to keep the artery open.
  • Recovery: After the procedure, you will be closely monitored in a recovery area. Most patients can return home the same day or the following day.

Benefits of Coronary Angioplasty:

  • Rapid relief from chest pain and angina symptoms
  • Improved blood flow to the heart
  • Enhanced overall heart function
  • Minimally invasive with a shorter recovery time compared to surgery
